The New Kid on the Block by Eleni Seitis

In nature, sugar can either be an energy source or a poison, as in the case of sugar addiction. When carbohydrates, or high sugar-laden foods, are consumed, our bodies metabolise these into simple sugars, raising our blood sugar levels. This leads to fuelling inflammation in the body, weight gain, metabolic disorders, and creates a cascade of processes within the body that keeps our bodies on the sugar craving cycle.

Glucose is necessary in our bloodstream to give our cells the necessary materials to produce energy for our body’s needs. The danger exists when our blood has too much glucose (blood sugar). When we consume high-carbohydrate or sugary foods, our bodies secrete large doses of insulin to keep the blood sugar levels at an optimum level. Increased insulin levels in the body from the constant consumption of carbs will store the excess glucose as fat. Excess carbohydrate consumption leads to “carb toxicity” whereby our bodies have increased blood sugar, elevated blood fats, excessive weight gain, poor sleep, sluggish physical and mental energy. When our blood sugar levels become low, we crave sugar, and the cycle is repeated. Suppose our body is unable to produce sufficient insulin to import the glucose from our bloodstream into our cells. In that case, we may end up with conditions like diabetes or insulin-resistance syndrome. When you help your body to heal itself, you will enjoy life’s benefits more.

Are there ways to manage the amount of glucose our body produces from the carbohydrates we consume? Thankfully, yes, there is.

Here are a few options to help you.

  1. Energy is gained from the food and beverages we consume. Therefore, reducing carbohydrate intake daily creates less glucose that will go into our bloodstream. Our body can make glucose from the excess fat we store, which is what happens when we fast. Eating more fibrous foods (fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains) provides soluble fibre which slows carb digestion and sugar absorption. Drinking more water prevents dehydration (often mistaken for hunger) and assists the kidneys to flush out excess sugar through urine.
  • Daily exercise is important to keep us flexible and moving freely, while helping with managing our weight and clearing toxins from our bodies. When our muscles contract during exercise they use blood sugar to supply the energy for that action. Even doing 5-10 minutes of exercise daily will equate to 35-70 minutes of weekly activity. Walking, running, weightlifting, gym classes, dancing, hiking, swimming, half-squats, leg raises, chair yoga, even laughter yoga, are all examples of some activities that you may be able to start with. For those that sit at a desk all day or have sedentary lifestyles, getting up every 30 minutes and moving your body to get the blood flowing and heart beating a bit faster all contribute to improved energy metabolism. If you have blood sugar management issues, perhaps checking your levels before and after exercise will help you to understand how your body uses sugar for different activities.
  • Taking certain supplements can assist the body to manage carbohydrates. Emulin 5 is a scientifically formulated blend of three active herbal ingredients (Coffea arabica as chlorogenic acid, Myria cerifera as myricetin, Styphnolobium japonica as quercetin), creating a synergy of flavonoids, with the addition of Vitamin C and a probiotic, Lactobacillus plantarum. The herbal blend manages carbohydrate metabolism to support healthy blood sugar levels and relieve inflammation, Vitamin C is included as an antioxidant to reduce free radicals formed in the body and promote immune defence, and the Lactobacillus plantarum supports a healthy gastrointestinal system.
