Your body is the only thing you truly own in your life and it is your GPS to what is happening for you and to you. You see your body talks and is trying to tell you whether you are on purpose or going against your heart’s desires or your need a lifestyle change.
Have you ever had cravings? This is your body letting you know what you are needing at that time. The best example is chocolate! And what woman does not like chocolate especially before their menstrual cycle. Why chocolate at this time? Chocolate contains magnesium and is natural pain relief and so the body craves this magnesium and we interpret it as chocolate. Maybe it’s a great excuse to eat chocolate.
There is a myth that women when pregnant want pickles and ice cream. That is correct, as they may be requiring folic acid from the pickles which prevents birth defects and the ice cream, or dairy as they need zinc. Zinc is found in cells throughout the body and helps the immune system fight off invading bacteria and viruses. During pregnancy the body needs zinc to grow and develop properly.
At every stage of life your body is trying to tell you something.
Annie worked in a job she did not like, and her heart’s desire was to work as a Ranger, as she loved nature and people. Every day Annie woke with a headache and feeling nauseated. She reluctantly went to work as she had bills to pay and that was her only means to earn income, so she thought. Her headaches were indicating ‘limitations’ and the nauseas was the stomach saying ‘rejection’. Her body spoke loud and clear but she did not understand until one day she had a migraine for 7 days. She had never experienced this before and she sought medical assistance. She was unable to eat during that time. She was however able to hear her thoughts loud and clear as she lay in the hospital bed and the words that popped in were ‘leave your job’. As soon as she accepted this idea, her headache suddenly stopped and so did the nausea. Fear stepped in and she thought about having to return to her office job which she disliked and the headache and nausea came back. Her body was now screaming at her to pursue what she wanted. So, Annie found a job as a Tour Guide on bush trips and was studying part time to be a Ranger. She never experienced another migraine, headache or nausea again.
So how can you listen to your body and what it is saying?
Here are 4 easy tips to listen to your body:
- As soon as you feel pain, discomfort or an ache, stop. Take a deep breath and breath all the way out. Ask yourself ‘body, what are you saying?’ And take another 2 breaths in and out. This allows your body to relax so you can have insight to what is going on. Your may have a memory, or idea pop in to your head.
- Notice when and where you feel pain, aches or discomfort. Is it before work? Is it going into a meeting? Is it when you are studying? This is your body wanting you to make the situation and circumstance one of joy rather than pain.
- At certain times of the day have you noticed you feel brain fog? Is it at 2 – 3pm when the children are due home? Is it 4 – 5pm when you are due to finish work? This can indicate you need to take a 10 minute break and give yourself time to reflect. The brain, no matter what your age, is processing thousands of bits of information and at the end the day it needs time to integrate and process. If possible, have a piece of fruit and water just to refuel yourself and give you some energy.
- If you are craving specific foods, your body is screaming at you for certain vitamins and minerals. As discussed earlier, chocolate contains magnesium, pickles have folic acid. If you are hankering after sugary foods, your body probably needs chromium and if it’s fatty foods you may need more good salts. Research or seek nutritional support as cravings are a fabulous way to listen your body.
Lastly, thank your body for talking to you. It’s your vehicle to get you where you need, and it needs refuelling, attention and servicing just like a car. It needs rest, pampering, support and nurturing. When the body does not receive this, it will talk to you and may even possibly scream at you. And if you are unsure what the body is telling you, ask it ‘body thank you for talking to me what do you want?’ You will find the answer as the body will direct you always.
