Then Why Shower In It, Cook, And Give It To Your Kids To Drink?
If you’re someone who avoids artificial preservatives, buys organic, and reads ingredient labels…this might shock you…Most health-conscious Australians wouldn’t dream of rinsing their organic produce in swimming pool water. Yet many, unknowingly bathe in water that can contain even more chlorine than most pools. According to the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, tap water can legally contain up to 5ppm (part per million) of chlorine more than what’s typically found in many swimming pools, which aim for around 3ppm. (You can check the ADWG site yourself.)
If you’re not cleaning up your tap water, there’s a good chance you’re showering, cooking, brushing your teeth, and making tea with more chlorine than you’d find in many pools.
For those who’ve made the switch to organic food, natural skincare, and low-toxin living, this might come as a surprise. You’re working hard to avoid chemical overload, but there may be one major exposure you’re overlooking, your water.
It’s a well-publicised fact that chlorine and its by-products, like chloramine, are added to SEQ tap water to sanitise it before it reaches our homes (ref SEQ Water website). While these chemicals are effective at disinfection, once the water arrives at your tap, it becomes a daily exposure that can have side effects that most people aren’t aware of.
Here’s just a simple snapshot:
- Your skin absorbs chlorine during showers
- You inhale it in steam, which can trigger asthma or fatigue
- It can dry and irritate your skin and scalp, sometimes contributing to eczema, dandruff or even hair loss
- It can fade your clothing or shorten the lifespan of fabrics in your laundry
- It can impact gut flora and your body’s immune resilience
These are concerns that don’t often get talked about, but they matter, especially if you’ve already made conscious choices to reduce toxins in other areas of your life.
This chlorine issue is just one of ten water-related concerns I explore in my book, “10 Water Concerns Every Household Should Know To Safeguard Your Health”. Every point is based on publicly available information, which I’ve presented in a simple, easy-to-digest format. I encourage readers to check the sources for themselves and draw their own conclusions. The goal isn’t to scare-it’s to inform, so you can make decisions that align with your values and your family’s wellbeing.
After more than 20 years in personal development, helping people achieve their goals and improve their lives, I’ve noticed a clear pattern: no matter how driven someone is, one goal consistently rises to the top-to be healthy. Because without health, everything else becomes secondary.
That belief has shaped how I live. I’ve always been mindful of what I eat, how I live, and what I allow into my environment. But that awareness deepened when my partner and I began noticing recurring issues – dry, itchy skin, irritated eyes, and for her, ongoing unexplained hair loss. At first, we dismissed it as “just one of those things.”
But something didn’t sit right. So, I started looking into our tap water, and what I discovered was disturbing. Chlorine levels higher than in many pools, traces of heavy metals, and sediment, things you’d never knowingly expose your family to.
It opened my eyes to hidden health risks that many households live with unknowingly. That journey, combined with my long-standing commitment to health, is what inspired me to write my book.
If this article resonates with you, I’d be happy to send you a copy of the book. It’s available to buy on Amazon both in digital and hardcopy but for readers of Holistic Bliss Magazine, I’m offering it as a gift. I’ll even personally cover the postage and handling.
Just head to www.cleanmywater.com.au to request your copy. In the book you’ll find more details about what’s in your water, what symptoms to watch for, and what some of the health impacts may be.
You’ve already made smart choices by going organic and choosing natural products. Now it’s time to consider what’s coming out of your tap – the invisible ingredient in everything from your morning shower to your baby’s bottle.
