William Shakespeare wrote this famous line for his play Hamlet.
What are dreams? Ancient civilisations studied dreams to predict the future and find answers to questions.
As a child growing up in Northeast England, I remember my grandmother often exclaiming, “That’s broken my dream!” when something happened that jogged her memory of a dream from the previous night.
Years ago, I started to keep a dream diary. I’d been exploring different new age paths. Recording and studying dreams stood out to me as an easy way to discover more about how my inner and outer life worked.
Stuart, my husband, and I had moved to Queensland after working in Papua New Guinea for four years. We were keen to escape the British winters! However, we started to drift apart after moving to Rockhampton. One night, I had a dream where Stuart and I were walking somewhere together, and he suddenly started to sink into quicksand. I woke up distressed but immediately knew that it signified the end of our relationship. I had to leave my marriage and find my way home to God, on my own.
What followed was an amazing journey that brought me to the ECK teachings. That’s a story for another time.
The happy ending is that Stuart and I got back together after a four-year separation.
Over the years, I’ve worked out what certain dream symbols mean for me. Everyone has different interpretations, and the best dream dictionary is you!
For example, snakes mean spiritual growth or change for me, and rats mean love. I have a close affinity with both snakes and rats.
“As you unfold spiritually, your dream symbols are going to take on new meanings,” Harold Klemp, Raise Your Spiritual IQ Experience Journal.
Dreams and their meanings may not just come at night: there’s also waking dreams. This is when something catches your attention, whether it’s something you overheard or even a sign on a truck! These moments can give you insights into a question or confirmation that you’re on the right track.
The eckankar.org website has a wealth of information about dreams.
A good start is to keep a dream journal, as I mentioned earlier. Have a notepad and pen or pencil by your bed (or Notes on your device) and be prepared to write down your dreams as soon as you wake up. If I have a significant dream, I get up and go to another room so that I don’t disturb Stuart. Reviewing the journal regularly can start to unlock the meaning of your dreams.
Dreams are a spiritual goldmine. They offer glimpses into past lives, soothe a broken heart, and settle the deepest questions of life.
